3 Reasons You Should Care about Accessibility

In my work at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, accessibility was a key focus. It became ingrained into project timelines, consistently on our minds and was a topic of ongoing conversations.

Now that I am a freelance media producer, I’m noticing that most people aren’t thinking about accessibility.

When I sit down with a client to discuss a project, I explain why accessibility is a crucial step in video development.

Here are 3 reasons why you should care about accessibility.

1. Seeing and Hearing are Privileges

Don’t forget that many people depend on accessibility features. Closed captions, descriptive audio, and ASL aren’t just nice to have, they are a human right.

2. Your Message will Reach More People

Implementing closed captions and descriptive audio isn’t just about inclusivity, it is also a strategic move that opens doors to a broader market.

3. You Will Stay Involved as you Age

Many people lose their sight or hearing as they age. Accessible features might be the key that allows you to stay engaged and connected in your older years.

Any thoughts or feedback? I’m always interested in hearing from folks who are thinking about accessibility.
